Other Courses/ Programs

 

The following courses are available to students with varying needs and require counselor and/or teacher recommendation.

 

 

 

English Modules                                                                   1 credit year or .5 semester, Grades 10-12

 

 

Essential Questions will vary by student, depending on content to be recovered.?

Students will have an opportunity to recover English competencies and learn the skills necessary to be successful in English classes and literate in a global society. Students may work as a whole class as well as independently on particular topics/themes that correspond to the area of English that needs strengthening. Curriculum will also focus on Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language skills. Students develop a portfolio of work reflecting their skills in those competencies in order to earn credit.

 

Social Studies Modules                                                             1 credit year or .5 semester, Grades 10-12

 

Essential Questions will vary by student, dependent on content to be recovered.

 

Students will have an opportunity to recover social studies competencies and learn the skills necessary to be successful citizens in a global society. Students may work as a whole class, as well as independently, on particular topics/themes that correspond to the area of social studies that needs strengthening. Additional curriculum will focus on research, writing skills and analytical skills. Students develop a portfolio reflecting their skills in those competencies. At the end of each semester students have the opportunity to present their portfolio to receive credit for the course.

 

Division 1 Academic Support                                          1 credit year or .5 semester, Grades 9-10

 

The purpose of academic support is to reinforce concepts taught in class, as well as help students to develop organizational, time management, executive functioning, and study skills. Academic support teachers will help students develop awareness about their strengths and weaknesses as learners and use that information to set and monitor academic goals.

 

 

Division 2 Academic Support                               1 credit year or .5 semester, Grade 11

                                                                                 No credit year or semester, Grade 12

 

The purpose of academic support in Division 2 is to provide opportunities for students to access additional help with concepts taught in their content area classes, as well as work on needed skills such as organization, time management, prioritization, and student specific needs. Seniors enrolled in Academic Support do not receive credit for this course. Juniors enrolled in Academic Support will receive credit for this course. 

 

 

 

Math Support                                                        1 credit year or .5 semester, Grades 9-12

 

What Math skills are necessary for success in and beyond high school?

 

This course is for students who need additional support to be successful in their current/future math courses. Students enroll in this course concurrently with their math course. There are three equally important areas of focus: Numeracy, Skill Development and Mathematical Mindset/Approach to Mathematics. Class activities include numeracy building, problem solving, goal setting, targeted lessons and independent work time.

 

Senior Project Support                                         .5 credit semester, Grade 12

 

This class provides students with additional support and direction in completing the Senior Project process. Students are provided guidance and opportunity to actively pursue research, create quality documentation and develop their application of research. Students will be assisted in planning and organizing their projects. This course will focus mainly on the research component of Senior Project. It is not meant to replace the student/mentor relationship.
