Advanced Biology
1 credit year, Grades 11-12

How can the study of biology help us explore our physical selves, our natural world, and the human impact on our culture? How is biotechnology changing our world and lives?

This course is designed for students either interested in pursuing the biological sciences in college or for those wanting to explore contemporary issues in medical and veterinary sciences. The year will be framed by several study units including ecology, cellular processes, and comparative anatomy, classic and new genetics with a focus on new developments in biotechnology. During the ecology and cellular processes units, students examine the complex relationships among organisms in a local lake. In comparative anatomy, students examine how the structure and function of animals relate to the study of select vertebrate specimens including the mudpuppy, snake, and cat. Students will have the option to conduct virtual dissections. Using cutting-edge biotechnology equipment, students will learn valuable laboratory techniques including DNA fingerprinting, cloning, polymerase chain reaction, and creating recombinant DNA, such as glowing bacteria. Students wishing to take the AP Biology Exam will be encouraged to do so in May. Students are expected to have completed Living Systems or Biology. Students are required to complete summer assignments.
