Souhegan High School

Program of Studies 2019-20

Principal’s Message to Students

America’s system of education was built for an economy and a society that no longer exists…50 years ago, it was enough to master the “Three Rs” (reading, writing, and arithmetic). In the modern world, the “Three Rs” simply aren’t enough. If today’s students want to compete in this global society, they must also be proficient communicators, creators, critical thinkers, and collaborators.

                                                                               ~ Preparing 21st Century Students for a Global Society

Dear Souhegan High School Students,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 edition of the Souhegan High School Program of Studies. There is nothing more important to us than providing an engaging, relevant, inspiring student experience.

There is an urgency descending on education that is both inspiring and challenging. To provide vibrant, learning environments that truly prepare students to be college and career ready, educators are re-designing curriculum, improving instruction and methodology as well as expanding resources. The next generation classroom encourages student voice, promotes student choice, and provides opportunity for innovation, critical thinking and problem solving. In our next generation classrooms, students engage in authentic learning opportunities demanding real life application of content and skills. Your student experience is personalized – connecting you to knowledge and expertise beyond the classroom walls.

We perpetually review, refine and re-imagine our course offerings to provide you with the most relevant experience possible. Every component of this Program of Studies, indeed each course offering, is grounded in the beliefs expressed in the Souhegan High School Mission Statement:

                               Souhegan High School aspires to be a community of learners born of respect, trust and courage. Our                                     students are inspired to create a future with no limits.

                               We consciously commit ourselves:

                                       • To support and engage an individual’s unique gifts, passions, and intentions;

                                       • To develop and empower the mind, body, and heart;

                                       • To challenge and expand the comfortable limits of thought, tolerance, and performance;

                                       • To inspire and honor the active stewardship of family, nation, and globe.

We are genuinely invested in our mission. Our commitment to the mission prepares students to be college, career, and life ready. This publication is a tool to assist you in planning your education and pursuing your goals. The following information anticipates your questions and provides necessary information as concisely as possible.

As you plan your high school experience, take the necessary time to choose courses that serve your current interests, address your four-year goals, and consider your post-graduate plans. We encourage you to seek out the advice of your fellow students, your parents, your advisor, your teachers, and your guidance counselor.

Souhegan High School is committed to providing students deeper learning experiences. Students are guided toward mastery of competencies and skills necessary for success in college, career, and life. Students at Souhegan apply their learning through a variety of graduation requirements, including the Division I Exhibition, the Junior Research Project, Post Graduate Plan, Community Service, Extended Learning Opportunities and the Senior Project. We challenge and support all students to achieve and perform at high levels.

We are committed to the whole student and appreciate the various needs and interests represented in the student body. Whether the course is in performing arts, world language, engineering or literature, our students have access to inspiring learning experiences.

If you are a member of the ninth grade class, you want to consider your course choices relative to immediate and four year need. If you are a tenth, eleventh or twelfth grader, you will want to review your plans and modify your choices based on graduation requirements and your future aspirations.

Please be aware that some listed courses may not meet minimum enrollment; and, therefore, they may not be offered.   Likewise, additional courses may be added as needed.

We encourage you to consider how your co-curricular activities will blend with your academic course load. Ask the questions: How am I going to expand my comfortable limits? How am I going to make the most of my academic experience at Souhegan High School? How am I going to balance a variety of responsibilities?

As mentioned earlier, we are perpetually reviewing, refining and re-imagining our course offerings to provide the most relevant student experience possible. Additionally, there is significant work continuing this year in the areas of grading and reporting, dual enrollment courses, and other extended learning opportunities. We are excited by the positive impact these changes will have on your experience. Please look for updated information in the fall.

We hope you find the Program of Studies to be a useful tool. If you do have questions or need assistance, please remember to ask your parents, your advisor, your counselor, an administrator, or faculty members. The opportunities are here for those who seek them out.

We look forward to supporting you in your learning.

Sincerely,

Rob Scully, Principal
