Advisory

The purpose of advisory is to provide daily personalized support. Advisories foster our belief in being a community of learners born of respect, trust and courage. Advisory groups of approximately 10 students meet daily with a staff advisor who provides support for the group and each student. Our research indicates that the most critical element of a culture of safety and inclusion is dependent on positive relationships. Our advisories are particularly focused on fostering positive relationships.

Completion of four years of Advisory with a grade of a ‘P’ (Pass) is required for graduation. Each year of advisory has a particular purpose.

Grade 9 –To provide students with a small, supportive community in which they can learn and practice the behaviors and skills needed to become successful, responsible, and involved leaders in the Souhegan community.

Grade 10 –To reflect on individual growth and to identify learning styles based on the Division 1 experience in order to transition to Division 2.

Grade 11 –To apply knowledge of himself/herself to their Division 2 experience as well as to prepare for life after Souhegan High School.

Grade 12 –To apply his/her identified passions to their culminating experience as they move beyond Souhegan High School.

Division 1 Exhibition

The Division 1 Exhibition is designed to help students recognize and acknowledge their progress in the Souhegan High School Learner Expectations and the Mission Statement. It is a multi-step process for freshman and sophomore students to help them transition into their junior year.  The culmination of this exhibition is a one-hour long “roundtable” with the advisor, parents/guardians, peers, and a second Souhegan staff member, during which the student presents a portfolio of 9th and 10th grade work and reflects on growth over the first two years of high school.

The Division 1 Exhibition is a graduation requirement. Students who do not successfully complete the Division I Exhibition will work with their advisor and counselor to develop a plan for meeting this requirement.

Junior Research Project

The Junior Research Project, a graduation requirement, is a researched writing process that culminates with a comprehensive research paper written in the spring of junior year. As part of the World Studies curriculum, students gain research and writing skills that aid them in the completion of this paper. In their final product students exhibit their competence in the Academic Learner Expectations. The Junior Research Project is a graduation requirement.

Post Graduate Plan

All juniors will complete a post-secondary college and career plan. As part of the plan, juniors complete a college search, a resume, a transcript audit, and an introduction to the Common Application. The Post Graduation Plan exposes students to the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue a variety of post-secondary options.

Senior Project

Senior Project is a personalized learning experience that is a requirement for graduation from Souhegan High School. With support from a faculty mentor, students identify an area of passion, complete significant research, apply their research to an original project, and prepare a formal twenty-minute presentation. Throughout the senior project, students demonstrate their skills as independent learners including their ability to problem-solve, organize their time and resources, and reflect upon their learning. Senior project embodies Souhegan’s Learner Expectations; these skills contribute to life-long learning.
