Matters of the Mind

.5 credit semester

Grades 9-12

What practices and choices can I make to increase happiness? How does one promote and empower the mind, body, and heart? What is mindfulness?

Students will investigate current research and practices to improve happiness, stress management, and executive functioning skills in the 21st century. Students will learn the principles of positive psychology, growth mindset, and mindfulness. Brain-based research will be shared to increase students’ understanding of executive functioning skills and how these skills affects their personal choices, emotional functioning, and ultimately, feelings of contentment and success in life. Students will be inspired to explore topics of meditation, journal writing, random acts of kindness, purposeful gratitude, collaboration, growth mindset, emotional regulation, planning, goal setting, and attention, to name a few. This course is intended to help students not only learn how to develop and empower the mind, body, and heart, but to provide them with the time and space to integrate these practices into their daily lives.
